Worlds are Forming in My Heart

“I need to be silent for a while, worlds are forming in my heart.” — Meister Eckhart

When I first ran across this beautiful quote, I immediately began to see images of worlds in hearts, and I knew I wanted to build an art piece around it.  The sentiment of the quote - calling for a time of silent attunement to the inner life - resonates deeply with me.  As an artist and an introvert, I am aware that my creativity is constantly bubbling up from some deep inner source - a place I can only access in solitude and silence. I often crave quiet so that I can check in on the new "worlds" that are at some stage of emergence within me.

In the top piece, I like the mysterious addition of the open eye covering the image of the sleeping woman behind the glass lens - to me this suggests that part of us is always awake and vigilant, even when we may appear to be at rest, or in times when it may look to others like nothing is happening.

The internal space of the box, which is dark but glowing with immanent light, is filled with in-looking eyes watching for emerging ideas, emotions, and new clarity arising from within.  You can see the eyes mounted on each of the nails below the heart, and there are others on the inner walls.

The interwoven gold threads strung between the rusted nails create a protective cage of "heart strings" around the tender new world that is forming in the heart.  The porcupine quill found its way into the piece near the end - perhaps this spear-like quill is another symbol of protection guarding the sacred space in which the vulnerable heart can continue polishing the pearl of emerging insight.
