Three Graces

375.00

Three Graces took me into somewhat unusual territory - I don't usually focus on vintage-feeling work, but I discovered a treasure trove of quite old faux pearls that my Mother-in-law had collected over many years of garage sale-ing in her small Minnesota town.

The pearls seemed to call for a vintagy-feeling subject matter, and then I stumbled upon a photograph of three sisters taken in the early 20th century. As one of three girls myself, I can never resist a little trio of sisters, and they seemed quite at home in this box surrounded by the pearls and other assorted costume jewels.

I decided to make the three girls 'pearls' in their own right - each nestled in her own little shell with a dried violet in her hair and a feather just to soften the edges a bit.

In the other panel, the words charm, beauty, and joy (one version of the Graces) surround an assemblage which includes snippets of poetry, vintage soap labels, dried flowers, and a scarab, symbolizing the cycle of life or eternal life.  The word 'Joy' is mounted on a ceramic wing, which speaks to me of the ephemeral quality of joy, and perhaps a lightness of spirit which is part of what Grace feels like to me.

The whole piece is built into the interior of an old chess set (where the pieces would be stored) and the box actually closes up and can be latched.  This unusual substrate also allows the piece to stand sturdily on a shelf - with the two panels angled slightly - or it can be hung flat against a wall.  Your choice!
